Did you know Si Dian Jin is a Teochew tradition that dates back centuries to the Chao Shan region in Guangdong province, China? During the Guo Da Li ceremony, the bride’s mother-in-law will present a set of jewellery consisting of a gold necklace, a bangle, a ring and a pair of earrings to the bride as a betrothal gift. The Chinese word for “gold” (金) resembles the curved rooftops of Teochew houses, symbolising that the daughter-in-law is welcomed in her new home and that she will always be well taken care of.
Today, the tradition has now been adopted by other Chinese families amongst dialects. Teochew families typically gift a 4-piece jewellery set, while Cantonese, Hokkien and others may focus on getting one or two pieces of jewellery with the most common option is a pair of bangles.
